How the BPM refund on export works

The refund is the car’s gross BPM minus the fixed depreciation for its age since first registration (table of 1 July 2023). A 5-year-old car is depreciated by over 55 %, so about 45 % of the gross BPM comes back.

The car must have been registered in the Netherlands on or after 16 October 2006, be deregistered for export at the RDW and then registered in another EU country or EEA country (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway). Export outside the EU/EEA gives no refund.

You apply to the Belastingdienst within 13 weeks of the export notification, with the foreign registration certificate as proof. The refund goes to the person in whose name the car was registered at export.

Scrap cars, cars awaiting inspection (WOK status) and damaged cars are excluded. Amounts under €50 are not paid.

Buying a Dutch car as a foreigner? Watch for prices “excl. BPM” from many Dutch dealers: the dealer claims the refund and you pay the lower price. If the car is in the dealer’s name at export, the refund is the dealer’s — not yours.

Frequently asked questions

How much BPM do I get back on export?

The gross BPM minus the fixed depreciation by age: after 1 year about 67 % of the gross BPM, after 3 years about 55 %, after 5 years about 45 % and after 10 years about 22 %.

Who receives the BPM refund: buyer or seller?

The person in whose name the car was registered at the moment of the export notification at the RDW. If you sell to a foreign buyer and the car goes straight onto their name abroad, the refund is yours; a dealer who first registers the car in his own name gets it himself.

Does the refund also apply to export to Switzerland, Turkey or outside Europe?

No. Only on registration in an EU member state or an EEA country (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway). Switzerland and the United Kingdom are outside that.

Where do I find the gross BPM of my car?

On the Dutch registration card (part 1B) or in the public RDW register — this page fetches it automatically from the plate.
